Vietnam in December: Weather, Best Places & a 10-Day Itinerary

December is a good time to visit Vietnam if you choose the region to match the holiday you want. For warm beach days, start with Phu Quoc and southern Vietnam. For cooler city walks, food and culture, consider Hanoi. Treat Da Nang and Hoi An as a more weather-dependent choice: central Vietnam can still be wet, even when the south is enjoying its drier season.
This guide helps you decide where to go in Vietnam in December, what the weather differences mean, where to base yourself and how to build a manageable ten-day trip. It includes climate charts, a worked budget, booking priorities and a short packing list. The seasonal advice is useful beyond one year; the entry information and links were checked on 25 October 2026 for the coming December travel season.
Is December a good time to visit Vietnam?
Yes—especially for a trip centred on the south, or a mix of northern culture and southern warmth. The mistake is treating “Vietnam weather” as a single condition. A pleasant afternoon in Hanoi, a rainy day in Hoi An and beach weather on Phu Quoc can all belong to the same December.
Vietnam also has a timely travel story. In its UK Travel Trends 2027 report, Skyscanner lists Da Nang with a 68% year-on-year increase in return-flight searches. The underlying search window is 1 January–17 June 2026, for travel during 2026, compared with the equivalent period in 2025. That is a platform-specific demand signal, not a Google keyword volume or a forecast that December is the best month for Da Nang. See Skyscanner’s destination report.
For your own holiday, use the trend as inspiration and the season as a filter. If swimming matters most, prioritise the southern coast or an island. If you prefer museums, markets, coffee and street food, the cooler north may suit you better. Central Vietnam remains worth considering for its heritage, but it needs different expectations and more flexibility.
Vietnam weather in December: north, centre and south
The table compares average daily lows and highs and average total December rainfall at three city stations. These are 1991–2020 climate averages published through WMO’s World Weather Information Service and supplied by Viet Nam’s meteorological authority. They describe the long-term pattern, not the weather on your booked dates.
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways.
| Reference city | Average low–high | Monthly rain | What it means for planning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi / the north | 15.4–22.1°C 59.7–71.8°F |
24 mm | Cooler city sightseeing; pack layers |
| Da Nang / central coast | 20.5–25.3°C 68.9–77.5°F |
272 mm | Heritage and food with a rain plan |
| Ho Chi Minh City / the south | 23.9–31.6°C 75.0–88.9°F |
41 mm | Warm city days and southern connections |

The useful comparison is the contrast. Da Nang’s December rainfall total is substantially higher than the totals shown for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Lower rainfall in Hanoi does not mean tropical warmth, and a warm temperature in Da Nang does not promise calm swimming conditions.
Da Nang is a nearby climate reference for Hoi An, not an exact measurement of every street or beach. Ho Chi Minh City is not a substitute station for Phu Quoc. For current conditions, check Vietnam’s national weather service and any local marine warnings before a boat trip.
Sources, units and how to read these numbers
Temperature values are averages of daily minimum and maximum temperature. Rainfall is the average monthly total in millimetres; it is not a daily rain probability. Fahrenheit values in the table are calculated from Celsius and rounded to one decimal place. Full monthly data and source files are supplied with this article package.
When is Vietnam’s rainy season? The answer changes by region
There is no single rainy-season calendar that works for the whole country. The annual city data below show why a general statement such as “Vietnam is dry in winter” can lead to the wrong booking.

Use this chart to decide where to spend the most time, then use a local forecast for individual days. A lower monthly total can still include a wet afternoon. A wetter month can still have pleasant intervals. Neither chart can tell you whether one particular cruise or beach day will operate.
Is November or December better for Vietnam?
It depends on the route. November may appeal for northern sightseeing, while December is a useful starting point for a south-focused winter break. On the central coast, both require a realistic rain plan. Compare the exact regions rather than looking for one winning month for every destination.
Should you move a beach trip to January or February?
That can work for southern Vietnam, but do not transfer the same assumption to the central coast. If Hoi An’s beaches and Da Nang’s coastal activities are the main reason for travelling, compare a later spring trip as well. Check the dates of Tet if travelling into the new year, because holiday transport and opening patterns need their own planning.

Best places to visit in Vietnam in December
Hanoi: food, old streets and cooler city days
Choose Hanoi for a trip built around the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature, museums and long food stops. Its December appeal is a city you can explore in layers rather than a hot beach destination. Leave room for a hot bowl of pho, a café upstairs in an old building and an unhurried evening around the lake.
For an excursion, compare Ninh Binh with a Ha Long Bay cruise according to your interests and the forecast. Northern limestone scenery can look atmospheric in mist, but a cruise should not be sold to yourself as guaranteed blue water and sunshine. Leave a buffer and check the operator’s cancellation terms.

If the capital is in your route, explore Leeylo’s Hanoi travel plans for a clearer order of sights, food stops and map links.
Ho Chi Minh City: a strong southern starting point
Ho Chi Minh City—also widely called Saigon—works well as the arrival point for a southern trip. Plan one historic-centre day, one deeper museum or neighbourhood day and space for a guided excursion if it interests you. Put outdoor walking earlier in the day and save a shaded café or museum for the hotter hours.
The Central Post Office, the historic centre and a food-focused evening make an easy first introduction. Allow time to understand a museum rather than adding every major attraction to the same afternoon. District 1 is a practical area to start looking for a first-visit base, though the exact street and noise level matter more than the district label alone.

Phu Quoc: the first island to compare for winter sun
If your question is “Where are the best beaches in Vietnam in December?”, Phu Quoc belongs near the top of your shortlist. Vietnam’s tourism authority highlights December and January for an island escape. Choose it for a few proper beach days, not an overnight detour squeezed between two flights. Official Phu Quoc destination guide.
Compare the Long Beach area for a convenient first base with another coast if a particular resort or quieter setting is the priority. Check the hotel’s actual beach frontage, transport access and recent information about the shore. A listing that says “near the beach” can still mean a ride rather than a short walk.
For an island day out, choose one area—such as the southern beaches—rather than combining every advertised attraction. Boat trips depend on wind and sea conditions; keep one spare day instead of buying an island excursion for the morning of your departure.
Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay: scenery with winter expectations
Both can work as northern extensions. Ninh Binh suits a landscape-and-land-based stay; a Ha Long Bay or nearby bay cruise puts more of the experience on the water. In December, choose the activities you would still enjoy under grey skies. Check travel time from Hanoi, where the trip actually starts and what happens if conditions change.
For a short trip, choose one northern excursion. Adding both, followed by central Vietnam and an island, is how a ten-day holiday becomes a collection of transfers.
Should you visit Da Nang and Hoi An in December?
Yes for the right kind of trip; less confidently for a beach-first holiday. Hoi An’s old streets, lanterns, food and indoor experiences can still be rewarding. Da Nang offers cafés, museums and a useful transport hub. The trade-off is that rain, rougher sea conditions and low cloud may affect the days you had imagined outdoors.

If you include the region, stay for several nights and keep the outdoor options movable. Put an old-town walk into a better weather window, save a cooking class or slower café time for rain and decide on a mountain excursion close to the day. A cable-car ticket cannot guarantee a clear view.
Do not put a tightly timed outdoor day between an arrival flight and a long transfer. Check local warnings during severe weather, especially before river activities, coastal trips or travel on affected roads. Temporary disruption is a reason to change the day, not to chase the itinerary harder.
For a heritage-led stay, compare accommodation near Hoi An’s old town with a quieter surrounding neighbourhood. For a city-and-coast base, compare Da Nang, then include the actual transfer to Hoi An in your daily plan. The two places share a product name in many itineraries, but they are not the same walkable town.
Prefer a ready-made route? See Leeylo’s Da Nang and Hoi An travel plans. Choose the dates and style of trip first, then use a plan to organise the days.
Where to stay in Vietnam in December
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways.
| Destination | A first area to compare | Check before you book |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | Old Quarter / Hoan Kiem | Noise, stairs or lift, heating or warm bedding, and actual pickup access |
| Ho Chi Minh City | District 1, then the exact street | Nightlife noise, walkable sights, breakfast and airport transfer arrangements |
| Hoi An | Old town edge / nearby neighbourhoods | Walking access, recent weather information and alternatives during heavy rain |
| Da Nang | Central city or a beach-area base | Whether your priority is cafés, city sights or the coast; allow the Hoi An transfer |
| Phu Quoc | Long Beach or the coast matching your hotel choice | Real beachfront access, meals nearby, transfer costs and cancellation terms |
Book the location that improves most of your days, not the room that looks best in one photo. A cheaper property can cost more in repeated taxi journeys, and an isolated resort can be exactly right for a beach holiday but awkward for a restaurant-led city stay.
For travel around Christmas and New Year, compare the full final price before paying. Ask whether a special dinner, minimum stay or compulsory package is added to the room you selected. This is a booking check, not a claim that every hotel charges an extra fee.
Use flexible terms where a weather-dependent stay is important to you. Read the actual cancellation policy: “free cancellation” is only useful if its deadline still gives you room to make a decision.
A 10-day Vietnam itinerary for December: city and southern beaches
For a first December holiday with a strong winter-sun element, our starting route is Ho Chi Minh City → Phu Quoc → Ho Chi Minh City. It uses two main bases, two domestic flights and nine hotel nights. The return city night reduces the pressure of connecting an island flight to a separate long-haul booking.
This is a southern Vietnam itinerary, not an attempt to see the whole country in ten days. You gain more time in each place and fewer long transfers. Check flights before committing to hotels; no live departure times or fares are assumed here.
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways.
| Day | Main idea | Keep the day manageable | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City | Transfer to your hotel, eat nearby and take a short orientation walk if you have the energy. | Ho Chi Minh City |
| Day 2 | Historic-centre day | Connect the Central Post Office area with a museum or landmark visit, a proper lunch break and an evening food stop. | Ho Chi Minh City |
| Day 3 | One deeper city experience | Choose a neighbourhood-and-food day or a well-run Cu Chi excursion. Keep the rest of the day lighter. | Ho Chi Minh City |
| Day 4 | Mekong Delta or an extra city day | Choose one guided day trip with a clear itinerary and pickup, or stay in the city if you prefer fewer road hours. | Ho Chi Minh City |
| Day 5 | Fly to Phu Quoc | Use the morning or afternoon for travel, then settle into your beach base. Do not attach a fixed-time boat excursion to arrival. | Phu Quoc |
| Day 6 | Your first full beach day | Stay close to the hotel, learn the beach conditions and leave time for a relaxed lunch and sunset if the sky cooperates. | Phu Quoc |
| Day 7 | Choose one island outing | Compare a southern-beaches drive with a suitable boat trip; choose according to the sea and your interests. | Phu Quoc |
| Day 8 | A spare day that feels like a holiday | Use it for the beach, another part of the island or the outdoor activity moved from a wetter day. | Phu Quoc |
| Day 9 | Return to Ho Chi Minh City | Fly back, stay overnight and keep the evening easy. This creates a buffer before a separate international departure. | Ho Chi Minh City |
| Day 10 | Fly home | Allow time for hotel checkout, the airport transfer and the airline’s check-in requirements. | Departure |
Prefer Hanoi to the beach? Use a culture-first alternative
Spend the first four nights in Hanoi, including one optional northern excursion, then fly to Ho Chi Minh City for five nights before departing on day ten. Enter through Hanoi and leave through Ho Chi Minh City if those flights make sense for your departure country. That gives you two contrasting cities with one domestic transfer and no island detour.
If you want Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and beach time, add days rather than compressing the same route. Two weeks offers more room, but the central-coast weather decision still applies. More nights cannot turn a wetter season into a dry one.
Build the city days around a clear route.
Choose the city that is actually in your trip. Leeylo travel plans connect sights, food stops, practical advice and direct map links; transport, accommodation and attraction tickets are booked separately.
Explore Ho Chi Minh City plans Explore Hanoi plansGetting around Vietnam: flights, trains and local journeys
Domestic flights make sense when you need to connect distant regions within a short holiday. Compare the total journey, including the airport transfer, baggage allowance, check-in and onward ride. A short flight is still a meaningful part of a travel day.
Trains can be a rewarding choice if the journey is part of the experience and you have time. Use Vietnam Railways’ booking site to check your exact stations, date and available berth or seat. A sleeper train is not a way to add a free sightseeing day if you arrive tired or need to wait for your room.
For Hanoi excursions, confirm whether the price includes hotel pickup, the activity, meals and the return transfer. For Da Nang and Hoi An, arrange a clear point-to-point transfer rather than assuming a beach hotel is beside the old town. For Phu Quoc, inspect the location before choosing a cheap transfer rate; “the island” covers more than one hotel area.
In cities, use a reputable taxi or an available ride-hailing service, verify the vehicle and price, and keep your hotel address saved. Walking works best in smaller neighbourhood blocks. Choose one side of town for an afternoon instead of crossing the city repeatedly for individual cafés.
Separate tickets need extra care. If a domestic delay would cause you to miss an unrelated international flight, an overnight buffer is often a sensible use of a night. A through-ticket with a protected connection has different terms; read the airline’s actual conditions rather than assuming protection applies.
How much does Vietnam cost in December?
Vietnam can suit several spending styles, but a low daily food budget is not the same thing as the full cost of a multi-stop holiday. Add accommodation, flights, bags, transfers, tours and any peak-date hotel charges before deciding what is affordable.
The example below is a planning allowance for one adult travelling as part of two people sharing a room, following the southern ten-day route above. It is expressed in USD for comparison, not as a live exchange-rate calculation. Pay attention to final prices in Vietnamese dong and your card’s currency fees.
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways.
| Category | Assumption | Allowance / person |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 9 nights × $40 per room, divided by 2 | $180 |
| Food, coffee and drinking water | 10 days × $20 | $200 |
| Local transport and airport transfers | A shared planning allowance | $70 |
| Domestic flights | Two flights with an allowance for chosen baggage | $160 |
| Paid visits / selected excursion | Choose activities within this allowance | $80 |
| Contingency | Extra transport, weather swaps or small changes | $70 |
| Total | International flights and exclusions below are separate | $760 per person |
For two people on these assumptions, that is $1,520, before international flights, visas where needed, travel insurance, shopping, alcohol and activities beyond the allowance. A solo traveller using the same $40 room would budget $360 for accommodation instead of $180, taking this example to $940.
These numbers are not quotes or a minimum spending claim. Replace the room and flight lines with real prices first. Holiday-week resorts, higher baggage needs or a premium cruise can change the total substantially. If the flight line does not cover your actual tickets, adjust the route or budget before booking.
Where to save without making the trip harder
Stay in one useful area, alternate simple meals with a few special dinners and choose one major paid outing rather than several similar ones. Saving a small amount on a hotel outside your daily route may be poor value after repeated taxis. For Christmas and New Year, compare ordinary city hotels as well as beach resorts before assuming the island is the cheaper half of the trip.
What to eat in Vietnam in December
Food is one reason to leave room between attractions. In Hanoi, start with pho, compare a bun cha lunch and take time for a hot coffee. In the south, mix noodle dishes and banh mi with the restaurants near your actual base. On Phu Quoc, agree the price and weight before ordering seafood, especially when the menu is priced by kilogram.

At small food places, look for freshly prepared dishes and a steady turnover. Use drinking water you can trust and explain dietary needs clearly. Fish sauce, shellfish, nuts and broths can appear in dishes whose names do not make the ingredients obvious.
In Hoi An, a cooking class can be a good alternative to an outdoor excursion on a wet day. Ask what is included, whether the class still runs in bad weather and how you get there. A market visit or boat component should not be treated as automatically suitable in every condition.
Christmas, New Year and what to book in advance
If you are planning Christmas in Vietnam, decide whether you want a warm beach break, city atmosphere or a particular hotel celebration. Those are different purchases. Do not assume every town has a European-style Christmas market, or that a hotel’s festive programme is included in the basic room rate.
For December 2026, use confirmed operator and city announcements for any event you want to attend. This guide does not assume a particular fireworks show, one-off celebration or street closure has been announced. A hotel dinner or New Year’s Eve reservation can anchor one evening without taking over the whole itinerary.
- Book the international flight pattern first. Check whether arriving and departing in different cities improves the route.
- Compare peak-date accommodation early. Look at the final price, minimum stay and cancellation deadline.
- Connect the regional journeys. Leave time for the airport and check bags before comparing fares.
- Reserve only the activities that need it. Keep weather-dependent boat and mountain days flexible where the terms allow.
- Keep one buffer. It can be a beach day, a city night before departure or an uncommitted excursion day.
Vietnam entry requirements, packing and practical essentials
Check your passport and visa situation
Entry rules depend on nationality, passport, route and length of stay. For example, official guidance allows eligible UK, German and Spanish visitors visa-free stays of up to 45 days, while a separate government resolution includes Poland and the Netherlands among the additional eligible nationalities. Conditions still apply; do not treat “Europe” as one nationality. Vietnam Tourism’s exemption notice and the government’s additional-country notice.
US passport holders generally need a visa for a mainland Vietnam holiday. The official e-visa system offers stays of up to 90 days with single- or multiple-entry options; check the validity you receive, your entry details and the fee before payment. The island-only Phu Quoc exception should not be used as the basis for an itinerary that also enters mainland Vietnam. US State Department guidance · Official Vietnam e-visa portal.
Remember the pre-arrival declaration
Vietnam has introduced an online pre-arrival information system for international air arrivals. The Ministry of Public Security describes submissions within the three days before entry, and airline guidance identifies major gateways including Noi Bai, Da Nang, Cam Ranh and Tan Son Nhat. Check your flight’s current requirements and complete the relevant declaration through the official immigration portal; save the confirmation. This declaration is separate from a visa. Read the ministry’s explanation.
Pack for two climates if you travel north and south
- For Hanoi or a northern extension: a light warm layer, long trousers and a compact rain shell. Mountain areas can be colder than the city.
- For central Vietnam: a rain layer, quick-drying clothing and footwear that remains comfortable on wet surfaces.
- For the south and islands: light clothing, sun protection, swimwear and something suitable for air-conditioned transport.
- For every route: comfortable shoes, essential medicines, insurance details, offline booking confirmations and a backup way to pay.
Arrange mobile data or a working connection before your first transfer, but keep the hotel address and key bookings offline too. Carry some Vietnamese dong for small purchases and check currency-conversion prompts when paying by card. For road travel, boats and weather-related disruption, read current official travel advice and follow local instructions.
Vietnam in December FAQs
Is December a good month to visit Vietnam?
Yes, if you build the trip around the regions. Southern Vietnam and Phu Quoc are strong starting points for warmth, Hanoi suits cooler sightseeing, and Da Nang or Hoi An needs a rain plan.
Is Vietnam hot in December?
The south is typically hot; the north can feel cool. The historical December city averages shown here range from a 15.4°C daily low in Hanoi to a 31.6°C daily high in Ho Chi Minh City. These are averages, not limits or a forecast.
Does it rain in Vietnam in December?
Yes. Rainfall varies greatly by region. The 1991–2020 averages used here show 24 mm for Hanoi, 272 mm for Da Nang and 41 mm for Ho Chi Minh City. A monthly total does not tell you how long it will rain on your dates.
Where are the best beaches in Vietnam in December?
For a beach-first holiday, compare Phu Quoc before assuming central-coast beaches will offer the same conditions. Select the hotel and beach carefully, then check local sea and weather information.
Is Hanoi cold in December?
It can feel cool, particularly early and late in the day or during a cold spell. Bring layers and check the forecast if you are adding mountain destinations. Hanoi city averages do not describe Sapa or other higher areas.
Is December a good time for Hoi An and Da Nang?
It can suit a food-and-heritage stay with flexible outdoor plans. It is a less straightforward choice for a holiday that depends on calm sea and daily sunshine. Use a central-coast weather check before booking fixed activities.
Is ten days enough for Vietnam?
Ten days is enough for a focused trip, such as Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc or Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It is a tight amount of time for the north, centre, south and an island in the same itinerary.
Is Vietnam expensive at Christmas?
It depends on the hotel, flights and activities you choose. Compare actual holiday-week prices and any special meal or minimum-stay requirements. Our $760 example is a transparent planning scenario, not a guaranteed Christmas price.
What should I wear in Vietnam in December?
Pack for the regions: a warm layer for the north, rain protection for a central-coast stay and light clothes plus sun protection for the south. Comfortable shoes and suitable clothing for cultural sites are useful throughout.
Do I need a visa or arrival form for Vietnam?
Your passport and trip determine the visa requirement. Check official immigration guidance before buying non-refundable travel, and separately complete the applicable pre-arrival information declaration for your international flight. A declaration does not replace a visa.
